Back to Eweleaze 2K17

Back to Eweleaze 2K17

It’s been a while I know! I’ve been blogging about food for the past few years which became a full-time job (literally – check out www.luxuryrestaurantguide where I just spent 4 very happy years). All change again now though which has given me a little more time to get back to blogging about other things important to me… namely Gin and Cavadors!!

So where better to get started again than a revisit to the magical Eweleaze Farm where we spent a wonderful week in August with our friends… and Louis was able to rekindle his romance with the lovely Millie!

Eweleaze 2K17 literally had EVERYTHING! From rainbows and doggie romance to Carnivals and the Red Arrows. We had ‘Gazebogate’ and nearly lost two tents at 1am one morning (thankgod we hadn’t hit the red wine too hard that night), new friends joining and old friends returning.

Here is a flavour of our time there… with of course our lovely Louis.

Every year Eweleaze adds something else to its offering and this year was no different with cocktails in the farmyard and a shepherds hut sauna!

The UK weather of course through us its challenges, four seasons in ONE HOUR let alone one day!! The beauty of Weymouth bay though is that the clouds roll off it so quickly leaving hours of clear blue sky behind to enjoy.  One of the most amazing treats we’ve ever experienced at Eweleaze was a display by the actual Red Arrows, over the bay and the farm, as part of Weymouth carnival week – literally awesome.

Weymouth Carnival was another unexpected treat. Louis was desperate to see what was going on as the marching bands were going by so had to be lifted to shoulder height above the crowds to get a peek!

One thing we’ve found that Louis is NOT at all fond of is boats – though a water lover he clearly feels very unsure and worried when he has to cross a gang plank and sit on a deck. We took a small ferry over the harbour in Weymouth and he was very brave but it’s not something he is at all comfortable with!

Over the years we have been coming to Eweleaze we have become really fond of Weymouth. It is a quirky place in many respects and has a shabby charm that is missing from many ‘tricked’ up seaside towns these days (the ones full of Jack Wills boutiques and Rick Stein restaurants…). You wouldn’t come across this type of mannequin in the shops of Padstow for example!

Sadly (but thankfully) Louis’ romance with Millie never got going and he is set to be an unrequited suitor. Fortunately he was able to find solace in his bone…

Cavadors and Camping – would you??

Well we have for three years in a row now and I can attest that Cavadors camp really well! We visit a fabulous site in Dorset every year called EWELEAZE FARM which loves animals. We always go in a big group and all four families have two daughters and at least one dog – who are also all male!

Louis loves that fact that he has all of us all of the time for the holiday and that we all sleep together and he is not left out! We generally leave him on a long tie out cable so that he can wander about our own site without actually bothering anyone else as I don’t think he would be able to resist another tents bacon breakfast for long!

We love to laze about on site, taking hours over breakfast and then sliding easily into a cider lunch. Afternoons we ramble across the headland to a pub called The Smugglers Inn which is about 2 miles and we get back in time for sunset and a cook out over an open fire along with a raucous old sing song.

In the wig-wag gang we have our Cavador, a pair of Cockadors, a Cockapoo, a Pooschon and a very exotic Chiuwawa cross Pomeranian (oh and early on we had a visit from some friends with a golden retriever puppy). Then there is Jerry. We have no idea what he is but in festival terms he is very much the Bob Geldof of the camp.

Sometimes the dogs do act as a pack – someone walking a bit close to our camp with several dogs can arouse a chorus of barks from them all which can be a little un-nerving I guess but from our point of view it means that we don’t get people pitching right on top of us which we prefer! The dogs also don’t mess within the camp either which helps when you have barefooted kids running everywhere. Infact it is the other animals that wander freely around the entire campsite (Alpacas, sheep, miniature ponies and goats) who create the mess – marauding through encampments!

Louis is stick and stone obsessed and will spend hours on the beach finding a stone, picking up stone, burying stone, digging up stone, barking at stone…repeat. He is also a water dog so loves swimming and as Eweleaze has it’s very own beach with access from the site which allows dogs we have had some wonderful days on the beach with him swimming in the sea with the girls.

If you like camping and you are after a really chilled site then this place is heaven. All the space in the world with fantastic views and the most fabulous sunsets. The children get great freedom and we don’t see them for hours on end – returning when they are hungry!

The dogs love having us with them all the time. Every now and then we did have a morning chorus of early barking if someone decided to walk past our encampment a bit close but generally Louis slept happily in his bed next to us (we have a double height air bed which we managed to keep him off of). At home he is not allowed upstairs in the bedroom so this is real treat for him!

The odd bit of food snaffling goes without question as kids leave their plates on the grass but with so much exercise every day we tend to turn a blind eye to the dogs making the most of the opportunities.

I guess not all campsites are the same and we got very lucky with Eweleaze as it suits all of our needs but we can highly recommend taking your Cavador camping!

Very Sad News

We were so very upset and sad to hear that Louis’s brother, Max, died just before Christmas. It seems that he ingested a grass seed which caused a growth and although he survived the subsequent operation he died of an embolism shortly before he was due to come out of hospital. His owners are devastated and our hearts and thoughts are with them both. Max was such a handsome dog and he will always be remembered by us as the little puppy we very nearly chose instead of Louis so he has a special place in our hearts.

Took this pic of Louis earlier this week and just had to share it!!

Cavadors like Company!

So sorry it’s been such a long time – I’ve been writing a food blog for the last six months (check it out at http://designrestaurants.wordpress.com/) and I’ve become rather obsessed with cooking and eating out.

Elphaba’s owner emailed me recently however with news that they have another Cavador!! We are so jealous – they have called her Oreo – how cute is that? This prompted me to update the blog and I’m so pleased to see how many visitors we’ve had.

What is interesting about Helen’s new Cavador, Oreo,  that she is super tiny still – even though she is 8 months old she is still only 10KG and they don’t expect her to reach more than 12kg. Elphie is around 20kg and Louis is 22kg so this is a big difference.

So Elphie took a little while to get settled with her new pal but now they adore each other. Check out these pic’s. And exciting news – Oreo’s breeder has just had another litter of Cavador’s!  These lovely pup’s are so very rare and litters don’t come along very often. Message me for details (Breeder is based in UK).
